By Anupam Mishra: The Calcutta High Court on Wednesday ordered National Investigation Agency (NIA) probe into the death of two youths, who were killed in a clash between students and police in North Dinajpur district of West Bengal in September 2018. The court maintained the investigation has been handed over to NIA as there was an allegation of explosion.

The court had expressed its dissatisfaction over CID investigation in April 2022 in the Darivit school shooting. According to the court, NIA investigation was ordered as it was alleged that crude bombs were used.

The incident occurred when students of Darivit High School in Islampur came face to face with the police forces. The two deceased were been identified as Rajesh Sarkar and Tapas Barman. While Sarkar died at the spot, Barman was shifted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The families of the deceased alleged that the two students died in police firing. However, the police administration denied that allegation. The victims’ families appraoched the court demanding a CBI investigation into the incident.

Students of the school in Islampur were agitating against the recruitment of two Urdu teachers. They sought recruitment of teachers for other subjects like English, Bengali, History and Science.

This is the second case to be transferred to NIA in the last fortnight on orders of the high court. On April 27, Calcutta High Court ordered NIA probe in recent communal clashes in Howrah Hooghly and Dalkhola during Ram Navami celebrations as allegations came up of crude bombs being used in the incidents.
