Congress is king in Karnataka, JD(S)’s kingmaker hopes dashed

By India Today News Desk: As the counting of votes for the Karnataka assembly election result is underway, the Congress continued to hover beyond the majority mark of 113, with the party ahead in 124 seats, the Election Commission’s (EC) trends showed.

If the trends hold, the Congress will be able to form the government on its own in Karnataka and won’t require JD(S)’s help in cobbling up numbers.

The BJP and the JD(S) are ahead in 69 and 24 constituencies, respectively, according to the EC trends.

Counting began at 36 polling centres across the state at 8 am.

A party or an alliance needs to attain the magic number of 113 to form a government in Karnataka.

Five independents were leading, and the Kalyana Rajya Pragathi Paksha and Sarvodaya Karnataka Paksha were ahead in one seat each, the trends say.

Karnataka went to polls on May 10 to elect 224 members of its Legislative Assembly.

In the 2018 Assembly polls, the BJP won 104 seats while the Congress secured victory in 80 seats. The JD(S) emerged victorious in 37 seats.
