Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury writes to poll panel over PM Modi’s remark on Sonia Gandhi

By Suryagni Roy: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury on Tuesday wrote to the Election Commission of India (ECI) demanding action against Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his remark on Sonia Gandhi, made while campaigning for Karnataka polls.

Chowdhury said that PM Modi made “false and derogatory” remark about Sonia Gandhi while campaigning in Karnataka. PM Modi’s remark, he said, was a violation of the Model Code of Conduct during elections.

He was referring to the prime minister’s statement in which he said that Sonia Gandhi wanted Karnataka to be separated from India.

Addressing the public meeting in Mysuru district last week, PM Modi took exception to Sonia Gandhi’s remark at a poll meeting where she talked about Karnataka’s sovereignty. The BJP also filed a complaint with the Election Commission, alleging Sonai Gandhi’s remarks were ‘divisive’ in nature.

“The Prime Minister, while campaigning in Karnataka, made false and derogatory remarks about Shrimati Gandhi that she in one of her election campaigns said that she wants Karnataka to be severed from India,” he wrote in his letter to the Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar.

“Such a statement is derogatory, malicious, false and has been made with an ulterior motive to malign Shrimati Gandhi and also to malign the honour and pride of Kannadigas,” he wrote.
