By Divyesh Singh: A scientist working in one of the facilities of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in Pune has been arrested by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on espionage charges.

The ATS officials said that on May 3, a DRDO scientist in Pune, while carrying out official duties, was found to have had contact with agent of a ‘Pakistan Intelligence Operative’ (PIO).

The accused scientist was in touch with the PIO through social media via WhatsApp Messeges, voice calls, video, etc. Officials said that despite holding a responsible position, the DRDO official has misused his post thereby compromising sensitive government secrets, which could pose a threat to India’s security if it falls into the hands of the enemy nation.

The ATS police station at Kalachowki Mumbai, has filed a case under Section 1923 of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and other relevant sections. Officials said that further probe is being done by investigating officer for the case who is of Senior Police Inspector rank from Anti-Terrorism Squad, Pune Unit.
