By Shilpa Nair: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) in Tamil Nadu on Thursday said the Election Commission (EC) had “accepted” the elevation of Edappadi K Palaniswami as its general secretary. This comes on a day the Madras High Court resumed the hearing into his rival camp’s pleas over the leadership of the party and other issues.
Taking to Twitter, party spokesperson R M Babu Murugavel said the EC had “accepted” the amendments to the AIADMK bylaws, the general secretary election and the appointment of new office-bearers.
In his letter to E. Palaniswami, Murugavel said, “I am directed to communicate that the amended rules and regulations of the party and change in the Office Bearer communicated vide your letters under reference have been taken on record subject to any further court order/direction.”
The came on a day when a division bench of the Madras High Court was hearing a plea by deposed leader O Panneerselvam against his expulsion from the party last year and the elevation of Palaniswami as the general secretary of AIADMK.
Edappadi K Palaniswami is a former chief minister of Tamil Nadu and was elected the general secretary of the party on March 28.
It is noted that a civil suit filed by Manoj Pandian challenging his removal from the party and the appointment of Edappadi Palaniswamy as interim general secretary – both decisions made during the AIADMK’s General Council meeting on July 11, 2022 — is still pending in court.
