‘Guilty must be punished’: Senior BJP leader extends support to protesting wrestlers

By India Today News Desk: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and former Union minister Birender Singh on Monday met with wrestlers protesting at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar demading arrest of WFI chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh citing sexual harassment charges.

Speaking to reporters, after meeting the protesters, Birender Singh said that the guilty must be punished after investigation.

The veteran politicians also took to Twitter and shared a picture of his meeting with the protesting wrestlers. “Met with protesting sons and daughters of India protesting at Jantar Mantar,” he captioned the image.

Leading female and male wrestlers of the country have been on a sit-in at Jantar Mantar since April 23 demanding strict action against the Wrestling Federation of India chief. Even several farmers’ body have joined the protest to express solidarity with them.

Delhi Police registered two FIRs against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. Earlier this week, Delhi Police recorded statement of WFI chief in connection with the allegations of sexual harassment.

The first FIR pertains to allegations levelled by a minor wrestler which has been registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO), while the second one has been registered over complaints by adults pertaining to outraging of modesty.

Delhi Police has also formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations levelled by wrestlers against the WFI chief.

Meanwhile, Brij Bhushan Singh, a BJP MP, has refuted to the allegations made by female wrestlers and urged the protesters to wait for the probe report. He also claimed he was innocent and alleged that he was targeted as he had brought reforms in the selection process for wrestlers.
