Heat to batter UP, Delhi as mercury to go above normal; rain likely in Kerala, Karnataka, Northeast

By India Today News Desk: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said strong winds are likely in the national capital on May 10 during the day with an increase in the maximum temperature, climbing 38 degree Celsius in Delhi. The IMD also forecast a minimum temperature of 23 degrees Celsius in Uttar Pradesh’s Lucknow and a higher temperature similar to that of Delhi.

On the other hand, the IMD forecast gusty winds with lightning in Kerala, Karnataka, Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and coastal Karnataka.

At the same time, skies are likely to remain clear in both regions, as per the IMD.

Chances of rain

Andaman and Nicobar Islands is very likely to record squally wind on Wednesday, as per the IMD. The weather department estimated that a wind speed could reach 55-65 kmph gusting to 75 kmph and advised fishermen not to venture into the southeast, east-central and west-central Bay of Bengal.

The IMD forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall over the Islands and South Karnataka and Kerala in the next three days.

Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand are likely to experience pleasant weather with thunderstorms and lightning in the next two days. Thunderstorms and lightning are likely over Northeast India, including in Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, on May 14.

Snowfall

Unseasonal and fresh spells of snowfall in several areas of the Western Himalayas are likely, as per the IMD. This came after parts of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh received fresh snowfall in the second week of May.

Heatwave

As per the IMD, isolated pockets of Bihar and some parts of Gangetic West Bengal and Sikkim are likely to experience heatwave conditions. The condition is predicted to continue over the next three days, as per the IMD.

Minimum temperatures

The minimum temperatures on May 9 remained above normal in several states, including West Bengal, Sikkim, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Nagaland, Mizoram, Odisha, Ladakh and Kerala, as per the IMD. In J&K, the minimum temperature was below normal by five degrees Celsius.

Cyclone Mocha

In the wake of a cyclonic circulation over the Southeast Bay of Bengal, the IMD issued a warning for the central Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea on May 10.

As per the IMD, the well-marked low-pressure area concentrated into a depression yesterday (Tuesday), packing wind speeds of 45 to 55 kmph and gusting to 65 kmph over the south-east Bay of Bengal.
