By India Today News Desk: A second-year B Tech student pursuing Chemical Engineering was found hanging in a hostel room at the Indian Institute of Technology in Chennai on Friday. If police confirm, this will be the fourth case of suicide at the premier institute this year.

The IIT Madras has repeatedly said it has strived to improve and sustain the wellbeing of students/scholars, faculty and staff on campus, while constantly evaluating the various support systems in place. But, according to the institute, the post-Covid environment has been “challenging”.

Following the high number of suicide deaths on the campus this year, IIT Madras constituted a standing Institute Internal Inquiry Committee, including elected student representatives to look into such incidents. But two more suspected suicide deaths were reported soon after.
