By Pankaj Upadhyay: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut hit out at Maharashtra Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar over his meeting with Law Minister Kiren Rijiju ahead of the much-awaited decision of the Supreme Court on the disqualification of Maharashtra legislators.
Raut asked if Narvekar’s meeting with Rijiju for over three hours was a form of “muscle-flexing” in anticipation of the Supreme Court’s verdict.
“Is this some muscle flexing going on here? Does Rahul Narvekar already know of the Supreme Court’s judgment on disqualification of legislators after meeting the law minister for over three hours? Is this the reason why he’s going on a tour now? We believe in the Constitution of the country, and we are all waiting for the decision of the apex court. But with whatever is happening, the people also have a sense of scepticism.” said Raut.

Earlier, Narvekar had stated that the disqualification of MLAs for violating the anti-defection law was solely within the jurisdiction of the Speaker. He referred to the tenth schedule of the Constitution and asserted that no court had the authority to make a decision on the matter. The Speaker of the House has the final say on such matters.
The Uddhav Thackeray faction has been arguing that the legislators led by Eknath Shinde have violated the anti-defection law, and the Supreme Court’s decision is expected soon.
Meanwhile, the Assembly Speaker is set to fly to the UK for a four-day tour to attend conferences organised by an economic policy group.
