By India Today News Desk: The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) retained the Jharsuguda Assembly constituency in Odisha as its candidate Dipali Das trounced her BJP rival Tankadhar Tripathy by margin of over 48,000 votes. Dipali Das is the daughter of slain state health minister Naba Kishore Das, who was shot dead by his security guard earlier this year.

Dipali Das polled 1.07 lakh votes while Tripathy got 58,384 votes. Congress’s Tarun Pandey was a distant third with 4,473 votes.

Talking to reporters after her win, Dipali said this was her father’s victory.

The bypoll to the Jharsuguda Assembly seat was neccesitated following the death of Naba Kishore Das who died in January this year.

Naba Kishore Das died from gunshot injuries after a policeman, who was on his security detail, shot him from close range while he was on his way to attend an official programme in Brajrajnagar in Jharsuguda district.

He is survived by his wife, Minati, and two children. The minister was considered a strongman in the Jharsuguda district, a mining hub. The 60-year-old was with the Congress before switching over to the BJD ahead of the 2019 polls.
