By Shibimol KG: Kerala Congress leader Johnny Nellore resigned from the party on Wednesday. Nellore also resigned as the United Democratic Front (UDF) secretary.
Kerala Congress was founded by KM George in 1964 after he quit the Indian National Congress (INC).
After resigning from the Kerala Congress, Johnny Nellore said he would form a national secular party, which would join the National Democratic Alliance led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Nellore’s resignation comes ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Kerala, a move seen by many as the BJP’s bid to win the support of various Christian churches across the state.
Johnny Nellore is expected to announce his alliance with NDA before PM Modi arrives in the state. The former UDF secretary is likely to form his party with the support of various churches.
However, the leader said he resigned due to personal reasons, adding that his new party will be dedicated primarily to farmer issues.
Nellore’s switching of allegiance to the BJP-led NDA is closely followed by Anil Antony’s induction to the saffron fold.
Anil Antony, son of Indian National Congress veteran and former Defence Minister AK Antony, joined the BJP in April.
He had resigned from all roles in Congress in January after his tweet criticising the controversial BBC documentary on Prime Minister Narendra Modi created a flutter in the party.
