By Rajesh Saha: The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered the West Bengal police to form a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl in West Bengal’s Kaliaganj.
In April, violence had erupted in the Bengal town – Kaliaganj after a minor girl was allegedly raped and murdered on April 21.
The girl had gone missing on the eve of April 20 after she had gone for her tuition classes. Her family was unable to find her the entire night and she was found dead by locals, the next day on April 21.
Superintendent of Police, North Dinajpur, Sana Akhtar had said that the two accused in the case had been arrested.
At the time of the incident, a video had emerged in which a few police officials could be seen dragging the body of the victim. Days later, the four Assistant Police Sub Inspectors (ASIs) were suspended for allegedly dragging the body of the girl.

The Calcutta High Court said that the SIT will consist of three members – IPS Damayanti Sen, former IPS Pankaj Dutta and former CBI director Upen Biswas. The SIT may, if needed, conduct a second autopsy of the deceased minor girl, said the court.
The case was heard by a bench led by Justice Rajashekhar Mantha who said, “The truth needs to come out,” in his observation.
The court’s order came in response of a public interest litigation (PIL) that was filed, seeking an impartial investigation by a central probe agency.
The Calcutta HC has also ordered the Bengal police to ensure the safety of the victim’s family members.
