By India Today News Desk: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government sought the Centre’s approval to appoint 1989-batch IAS officer PK Gupta as the new chief secretary of Delhi, officials said on Thursday.

The proposal was sent by Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal to Lieutenant-Governor VK Saxena, requesting his approval for the appointment. The Chief Secretary of Delhi, Naresh Kumar, is due to retire by the end of this year.

PK Gupta is currently serving as the additional chief secretary at the General Administration Department (GAD) of the Delhi government. He’s a 1989-batch IAS officer.

The Delhi government was given the executive power in services matters, including transfer and posting of officers, in an important verdict by the Supreme Court on May 16.

The Supreme Court ruled that the elected government in Delhi will now hold legislative and executive powers over services department matters, barring those related to land, police, and public order, that still come under the jurisdiction of the lieutenant governor.
