By Shibimol KG: The Kerala Police on Monday suspended the Station House Officer (SHO) of Dharmadam police station in Kannur, after a video showed him misbehaving and verbally abusing an elderly woman and her son.
The incident reportedly took place when an elderly woman along with her son visited the police station to bail out another son, Anil Kumar, who was taken into custody for driving under the influence of alcohol.
The video shows the SHO, K Smitesh, shouting at the elderly mother, allegedly in an inebriated state, and breaking the window of the vehicle in which she arrived. The family also alleged that the SHO pushed the elderly woman.
A complaint was lodged with the Kannur district police chief, and an inquiry was launched into the incident. The SHO was subsequently suspended as part of the inquiry.
Dharmadam is the assembly constituency of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and the incident invited criticism from opposition leader VD Satheesan, who claimed that the CM, who is also the Home Minister, has no control over the police force.
