By Anirban Sinha Roy: India’s first ever underwater metro completed the trial run on Thursday. Kolkata’s East-West Metro successfully completed the journey from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade and vice versa. India Today witnessed the much-awaited joy ride under the holy Ganga River of east west metro corridor, which is the green line of the Kolkata metro.
The train started from Howrah Maidan metro station and after crossing the three stations in between, it reached the Esplanade, which is also known as Dharmatala. It crosses Howrah railway station (metro station) and Mahakaran metro station. The identical twin cities Howrah and Kolkata, have been joined by this metro line, which is bisected by the river Ganga. The route between Howrah rail station (metro station) and Mahakaran is under water beneath the Holy Ganga River.
Now the question is when will it be open for general commuters? As per Metro Rail, this line may start its operation from October or November of this year if everything goes as planned. People are eagerly waiting for the operation to open as it will be very easy for the commuters to have a wonderful and comfortable journey from Howrah to Esplanade.
This green metro line will be joined with Esplanade and Sealdah later. The tunnel beneath the Ganga River is about 35 meters below.
