Kolkata’s Howrah Bridge to remain partially closed for next 27 nights for maintenance work

By Rajesh Saha: The iconic Howrah Bridge in Kolkata will remain partially closed for the next 27 nights in view of maintenance work to be done by Kolkata port trust.

Howrah Bridge will be partially closed only at nights, said a source in Kolkata police. The iconic Howrah Bridge was built in the British era, which connects Kolkata and Howrah district. One of the busiest bridges in the city built over River Ganges, the bridge needed maintenance since a long time.

On April 19, a meeting was held between Kolkata port trust, Kolkata police and Howrah police Commissionerate regarding the pending maintenance work on the Howrah Bridge. Following the meeting, a joint team consisting of Kolkata traffic police, Howrah city police and Kolkata port trust visited the bridge, and a blueprint was made to initiate the maintenance work.

After a long trial run, Kolkata traffic police granted permission to start maintenance work on the bridge.

“To conduct the maintenance work, we need 27 nights initially. For this, we have divided Howrah bridge into 9 parts. Each part contains 200 m only. The work will be done from 10 pm to 6 am during next 27 nights,” the police source told India Today.

“We have chosen the night time for this work because traffic pressure remains low on the bridge at this time,” a Kolkata police official said.

Deputy commissioner of Kolkata police (Traffic) Surya Pratap Yadav told India Today, “We have conducted several trial runs before starting the project work. It was assumed from the trial run that, there will be no major issues for the passengers. Traffic management will also not be affected during this time. One side of the bridge will remain open for traffic while renovation work will be underway on one third portion of the bridge. Kolkata and Howrah police are taking all steps to avoid traffic jam during the work.”
