Malappuram boat accident: Kerala Police takes owner into custody after tragedy kills 22

By Shibimol KG: Twenty-two people, including women and children, were killed when a houseboat capsized and sank near the Thoovaltheeram beach in Kerala’s Malappuram district on Sunday. The police have now taken the owner of the boat into custody.

The owner of the boat, identified as Nazar, was nabbed from Kozhikode.

Tanur Police had registered a case against the owner of the boat, which reportedly did not have a licence to function. The owner was absconding since the accident.

The boat had capsized near an estuary close to the Thoovaltheeram beach in the Tanur area around 7:30 pm on Sunday.

Following the boat accident, the Kerala government announced a judicial probe into the matter . The state government also announced a compensation of Rs ten lakh to the kin of the deceased.

Meanwhile, the State Human Rights Commission registered a case on its own over the tragic tourist boat accident. Judicial Member of the Human Rights Commission K Baiju Nath directed the Malappuram District Collector and the Chief Port Surveyor of Alappuzha to submit a report within 10 days.
