By Manjeet Sehgal: The students of the National Institute of Nursing Education, PGIMER, Chandigarh, facing action for not attending the 100th episode of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Mann Ki Baat on April 30, have told the PGI administration that forcing them to listen to the programme was against autonomy and their individual rights.
PGIMER barred 36 nursing students from leaving the hostel for a week after they skipped the session. The authorities had issued a written order stating that all nursing students from the National Institute of Nursing Education (NINE) should participate in the event on the campus, where the Mann ki Baat address was broadcast on April 30.
However, 28 third-year nursing students and eight first-year nursing students did not listen to the Prime Minister’s radio address. When they did not provide any reason for not attending the session, PGIMER authorities asked them not to leave the hostel for a week.

The students said attending the political events should be voluntary and action against them was not justified.
When India Today contacted PGIMER Director, Prof Vivek Lal, he said that he was travelling and had already issued a statement.
The statement forwarded by Deputy Director, Kumar Gaurav said, “The nursing students were asked to attend Mann Ki Baat on April 30 by the college authorities. The instructions were issued purely with an intent to enable them to attend the aforesaid episode as part of their regular curricular activities. Since some students did not share any reason for not attending the session and abstained from the event, the college authorities took action against them.”
Meanwhile, the BJP leader Praveen Attery said, “The disciplinary action has been taken on administrative grounds as watching the Mann Ki Baat was mandatory. One should not question the action.”
