By Indrajit Kundu: The Manipur government appointed Ashutosh Sinha, Additional Director General of Police (ADGP), Intelligence, as the overall Operational Commander to control the situation and bring normalcy in the state. Several parts of Manipur have seen largescale violence since Wednesday.
The Centre has also appointed a security adviser to the government of Manipur. Sinha will work under his guidance.
The order for Ashutosh Sinha’s appointment was issued on Thursday.
The move is seen as a clear snub to current DGP P Doungel after the law and order situation spiralled out of control over last couple of days and an escalation of violence across the state.
Retired IPS officer and former chief of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Kuldeep Singh has been appointed Security Advisor to the government of Manipur.
According to a state home department order, Sinha will work under the guidance and supervision of Kuldeep Singh, the 1986 batch West Bengal cadre IPS officer.
“In view of the prevailing law and order situation following the unwanted incidents occurred after the organisation of the Tribal Solidarity March, 2023 held on May 3, the Manipur governor is pleased to designate Ashutosh Sinha, IPS, ADGP (Intelligence), Manipur, as the overall Operational Commander to control and bring normalcy in the State,” said the state home department order issued on May 4.
Violence broke out in several districts of Manipur on Wednesday during the ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ called by All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district to protest the demand of non-tribal Meiteis for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
Thousands of agitators took part in the rally, during which clashes between tribals and non-tribals broke out.
So far, 9,000 people have been rescued by the forces from the violence-hit areas, and given shelter, a defence spokesperson said on Thursday, adding that more people are being shifted to safer places.
