By India Today News Desk: Several opposition parties, including the Congress, the Trinamool congress, and Samajwadi Party, hit out at the Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government over the murder of politician-turned-gangster Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf. The Opposition raised question over the law and order situation in Uttar Pradesh.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee slammed the Uttar Pradesh government, alleging a complete “collapse of law and order in Uttar Pradesh”.
“I am shocked by the brazen anarchy and total collapse of law and order in Uttar Pradesh. It is shameful that perpetrators are now taking the law in their own hands, unfazed by the police and media presence. Such unlawful acts have no place in our constitutional democracy”, Mamata Banerjee tweeted.
Former Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati said that the murder of Atiq and Ashraf openly in police custody raises serious questions over the style of functioning of the Uttar Pradesh government.

“It would be better if the Supreme Court itself takes cognizance of this very serious and very worrisome incident which is discussed all over the country and takes appropriate action,” she said.
Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge said “The country’s Constitution has been made by people who fought for freedom. This constitution has got the highest position and no one can be allowed to mess with it.”
“Judiciary has the right to decide the punishment of the criminal. This right cannot be given to any government, any leader or any person who violates the law,” he wrote on Twitter.
In a press statement issued by the Samajwadi Party, party chief Akhilesh Yadav said, “Uttar Pradesh is caught in the grip of ‘jungle raj’. There is no rule of law and the Constitution here. Crime has reached its peak, killings are happening openly on the streets. Criminals are fearless and have got the protection of the ruling party.”
“The systematic killing (of the duo) in the police security is the failure of the government. When someone in the police custody can be killed, then it can be guessed how safe the general public is,” Yadav added.
Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf were shot dead on Saturday night while being taken for medical tests in Uttar Pradesh’s Prayagra. The three accused, identified as Luvlesh Tiwari, Sunny, and Arun Kumar Maurya, were nabbed immediately. They were presented in court on Sunday and have been sent to 14 days’ judicial custody.
