By Pramod Madhav: A row erupted after an incident of a Chennai exam centre allegedly banning National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (Undergraduate) or NEET aspirants from wearing bras on Sunday came to the fore.

A regional journalist, who went to the exam centre in Chennai put out a tweet, which invited reactions. The journalist, requesting anonymity, said she had observed a girl sitting in a corner, feeling shy and clinging to a book outside the centre. The scribe asked the girl if she was alright.

The student told the journalist that she was feeling shy as she was allegedly asked not to wear a bra while writing the exam. The journalist said she had offered her shawl, but the girl politely refused saying that her brother was on his way to take her home.

The journalist faced backlash from trolls, forcing her to delete the tweet. Later, she gave a clarification stating that as far as she observed, over half of the girl students, who had come for the test were not wearing bras. “Those who ask me obscene questions should ask the exam board if wearing a bra is allowed or not,” she tweeted.

About 1.5 lakh students, across Tamil Nadu, appeared for the NEET exam on Sunday.

Speaking on the matter, state education minister Anbil Mahesh Poyyamozhi claimed that CM Stalin has already condemned such activities.

Anbil Mahesh expressed his condemnation of the way invigilators checked every student by removing their hairpin and dresses during NEET, which has been conducted for the past three years. The Chief Minister has been critical of this practice.

Narayanan Thirupathy, a BJP Spokesperson, stated that if any violation has occurred beyond the established rules and regulations, it should be condemned and the individual responsible should be punished. However, he clarified that this issue has nothing to do with the exam or the organization conducting it, as students willingly admit themselves and go to exam centers.
