NIA registers 6 FIRs over Ram Navami violence in Bengal

By Rajesh Saha: The National Investigating Agency (NIA) has registered six new FIRs under the Explosive Substance Act over the violence that took place during Ram Navami in West Bengal.

Violence and arson were reported in several places in Bengal’s Howrah and Hooghly during the Ram Navami procession on March 30.

NIA submitted a petition before the special court seeking a direction to take over all the case dairies and get a handover of all the arrested accused from the West Bengal Police. Earlier, Calcutta High Court passed an order for NIA to take over the charge of the investigation into the Ram Navami violence case.

An NIA source claims that in compliance with the order of Calcutta HC, the central probe agency has registered six new FIRs in the violence case.

Violence was reported during and after the rally of Ram Navami in three districts in West Bengal – Howrah, Hooghly and North Dinajpur. Of these, two FIRs have been registered at Dalkhola police station in North Dinajpur district, two FIRs at Shibpur police station in Howrah district and the last two FIRs have been registered at Rishra and Srirampur police station area in the Hooghly district.

NIA source told India Today, “Sections 3, 4 and 5 of the Explosive Substance Act have been added to all the 6 FIRs by the NIA which were not added by the police in the previous FIRs registered by the respective police stations.”

Meanwhile, special public prosecutor for the NIA, Shyamal Ghosh, told India Today, ” Chief Judge of the NIA special court in Kolkata, Uttam Saha, has accepted all 6 FIRs registered by the NIA and passed an order to the concerned authority to handover all case dairies to us and an order has been passed to the district judge to produce all the accused arrested in alleged violence case.”
