By Vivek Rajagopal: Kerala train arson accused, Shahrukh Saifi, used to watch videos of controversial preacher Zakir Naik and was highly radicalised when he planned the attack, said Kerala ADGP MR Ajith Kumar. On Tuesday, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the Kerala train attack case.

The NIA’s Kochi unit will investigate the case.

The top police officer was one of the officers who camped at the arson site in Kozhikode, checked the spot and interrogated Shahrukh Saifi.

Accused Shahrukh Saifi has been remanded in judicial custody. He is likely to be shifted to Viyyur Central Jail.

The accused is a resident of Delhi.

“The accused committed the attack with proper planning. The accused is radicalised. He used to watch videos of controversial preachers like Zakir Naik and Israr Ahmed,” the ADGP said, adding that they had evidence to prove that Shahrukh Saifi carried out the attack.

“The accused is radicalised. He used to watch videos of Muslim preachers like Zakir Naik and Isra Ahmed,” ADGP said.

“There was proper planning involved. But we cannot say that he is linked to any organisation,” the top police officer told the media.

The ADGP said police are investigating whether Shahrukh Saifi received any local help.

So far, all evidence has been scientifically examined, he said.

ADGP MR Ajith Kumar said further investigation should be done on other matters related to the case.

When the Alapuzha-Kannur Express train left Kozhikode railway station on April 2, an unidentified person poured inflammable oil on co-passengers and set them afire inside the D-1 coach. Three bodies, including that of an infant, were later recovered from the railway tracks.
