By Saraswat Kashyap: Night curfew will continue in Manipur’s Churachandpur district on the third consecutive night on Monday. Although there were reports of any violence in the past 48 hours, the administration took the decision as a precautionary measure.
A night curfew from 5 pm to 5 am was imposed in the district on Saturday after incidents of violence were triggered following the tribals’ protest against the state government’s action on poppy farmers. Action was taken against illegal poppy cultivators, destroying their fields in the protected forests.
With the reopening of shops, business establishments and markets, normalcy seems to be returning in the district since Sunday.
After the violence on Thursday night, state Chief Minister N Biren Singh had to cancel his visit to the district on Friday. He was scheduled to address a public gathering at Sadbhavna Mandap in New Lamka Town in Churachandpur and inaugurate an open gym at the PT Sports complex.
The miscreants torched the venue ahead of the Chief Minister’s schedule and also burnt down the open gym. Chairs and other materials that were gathered in view of the Minister’s visit were also vandalised.
Meanwhile, the Manipur Police has claimed that the people from Myanmar who illegally entered the state were also involved in the arson.
