By Siraj Qureshi: The World Heritage Day this year brought a special gift for tourists coming to Agra. While the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) arranged for free admission to Agra’s archaeological monuments as every year, a Tourist Interpretation Center was also inaugurated at the tomb of Mughal emperor Akbar, ‘Sikandra’.

Former ASI director PBS Sengar told India Today that the centre outside the entrance of ‘Sikandra’, the mausoleum of Akbar, will provide thorough information regarding the construction of Akbar’s tomb and relics. Images and films illustrating the monument’s history have also been exhibited here.

A live demonstration of creating ‘lime mortar’, which was utilised for construction during the Mughal period, was also displayed on this occasion. Students studying civil engineering were given information on the process of building construction with this mixture of ‘Dal-Batasha-Choona-Belpatra’. According to a senior ASI officer, all Mughal-era monuments were built with this lime mortar.

On Heritage Day, Agra’s Heritage Walk was also organised.
