‘Olympians accusing BJP MP of harassment, where is the FIR?’: BV Srinivas on wrestlers’ protest

By Saraswat Kashyap: Indian Youth Congress (IYC) president BV Srinivas, who has been booked on the charges of harassing former Assam youth Congress president Angkita Dutta, lashed out at Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma for conspiring against him and stopping him from campaigning in Karnataka, which is set to go to the polls on May 10.

Taking to his Twitter account, Srinivas said, “In the last 5 days, at the behest of the CM of Assam, a fake case was filed to stop me from campaigning in Karnataka. But the Olympians of the country have been accusing the BJP MP of HARRASMENT for months. Where is the FIR? Where are BJP ministers and agent organizations?”

Srinivas’s statement came after wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Mallik and Bajrang Punia staged an agitation at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on Sunday to protest against the inordinate delay of Wrestling Federation of India in taking action against its former president Brij Bhushan Sharan, who has been accused of sexually harassing female wrestlers.

ISSUE IS BEING POLITICISED: EXPELLED ASSAM YOUTH CHIEF

Meanwhile, the Congress has alleged that Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma made Angkita Dutta go to the police station and lodge a complaint against Srinivas BV.

On being asked whether Himanta Sarma had a hand in her filing a complaint, the expelled Congress youth leader said, “Absolutely not. I am very upset about the fact that the issue is being politicized. My idea was that an internal inquiry should be done about what Srinivas has been doing for the past few months and my grievances are addressed within the party. When it was not done, then I took to Twitter to express my grievances out of frustration.”

It has also been learnt that Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhupen Kumar Borah asked her to remain silent for at least 48 hours but Dutta still chose to file a complaint against BV Srinivas.

Asked about the same, Dutta said, “I went to his (Bhupen Kumar Borah’s) house and met him. That evening, I had dinner at his house and suddenly Borah told me that Srinivas will not file a defamation case against me…In one way, they were threatening me.”

“I was on my way home from Bhupen Borah ji’s house when I learnt that they have tweeted about sending a defamation notice to me. What is the value of the APCC president’s statement? Even after all this, I will still call him my mentor and have a lot of respect for him.”

“Srinivas cannot get away with the harassment case, he cannot. I am confident that the Congress will know the truth after the inquiry and they will remove my expulsion,” said the former Assam youth Congress president.

On being asked if she had any plans to join the BJP in future, Angkita said that she was never going to join the saffron party.

HIMANTA BISWA SARMA LASHES OUT AT CONGRESS

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma lashed out at the Congress for blaming him for the ‘lack of a safe environment within the Congress party for female workers’ and asked BV Srinivas to cooperate with the legal process.

Taking to his Twitter account, Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “The Assam police is acting in accordance with the law. They are currently investigating a case filed by a female Congress worker…It is unfair to blame me for the lack of a safe environment within the Congress party for female workers. Please advise the accused to cooperate with the legal process.”

ASSAM POLICE SERVES NOTICE TO BV SRINIVAS

Meanwhile, the Assam Police on Sunday served a notice to BV Srinivas to appear before the Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, East Guwahati, at the Dispur police station on May 2.

“Failure to attend/comply with the terms of this notice can render you liable for arrest under section 41A(3) and (4) of CrPC,” read the notice issued by the Assam Police.

A team from the Assam Police also reached Bengaluru on Sunday in connection with the harassment case registered against IYC president BV Srinivas but did not find the Congress leader there.

The police team pasted a notice at Srinivas’s Bengaluru residence and even sent a copy to his native place asking him to appear before the Assam Police on May 2.
