Our hearts are bleeding, says Kerala HC on Malappuram boat accident, demands status report in 3 days

By Shibimol KG: The Kerala High Court on Tuesday said that the May 7 Malappuram boat accident won’t be easily forgotten. The court, while initiating a suo moto PIL on the accident, called the accident shocking and haunting. 22 people had died when a tourist boat capsized in the Tanur area of Kerala’s Malappuram district on May 7.

On Tuesday, the court took up the matter on its own and directed the district collector to file a report by May 12 regarding the tragic deaths of 22 people, most of whom were children.

Justice Devan Ramachandran, who was on the bench, said, “Every time many lives are lost. Our heart is bleeding as several children died. These incidents are happening. There was no one to monitor even the police. Why? Our endeavor is to ensure that this will not happen in the future”.

The court also criticised the state government for not taking action against those responsible for similar boat accidents in the state. “Why there is no action against them,” asked the court.
