By Rajesh Saha: After West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee banned the movie ‘The Kerala Story’ on Monday, a public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed against the same in Calcutta High Court.
The petitioner who filed the PIL on Wednesday told the court that the Bengal government’s decision to ban the film is against the right to freedom of speech.
On May 8, West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee ordered an immediate ban on the Adah Sharma-starrer ‘The Kerala Story’ in the state. The Bengal government said that it was taking this decision to avoid “any incident of hatred and violence” in the state.
The announcement to ban the film came just minutes after Mamata Banerjee alleged that “the BJP was funding a film on Bengal on the lines of The Kashmir Files”
The PIL was filed before a division bench led by acting chief justice T.S Shivagyanam. The case will be heard soon by the division bench of Calcutta High Court.
Banerjee’s decision to ban the film drew sharp reactions from BJP leaders and film’s producer Vipul Shah, who said that the makers will take legal action against the Bengal goverment’s move.

Shah said, “If that is what she has done, we will take legal action. Whatever is possible under the provisions of law, we will fight.”
Bengal’s BJP president Sukanta Majumdar also criticised Banerjee and said that she wanted to “close her eyes to the reality.”
He said, “CM Mamata Banerjee has banned the movie ‘The Kerala Story. Nothing to surprise, it was expected of her. It is based on the true stories and shows how Islamists trap Hindu girls into Love Jihad and later send to become ISIS terrorists. Didi want to close her eyes to the reality.”
‘The Kerala Story’ is based on alleged instances of religious indoctrination in Kerala wherein Hindu and Christian woman were being targetted by radical islamists and sent to countries like Afghanistan, Yemen and Syria to fight for the Islamic State.
