By India Today News Desk: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted thunderstorms and light rain over parts of north India, bringing slight relief to people from the prevailing heatwave conditions.
Relief is in sight for northern parts of the country, which have been reeling under a severe heatwave, with rain predicted around April 18-20. Besides, IMD has also forecast thunderstorms in parts of Andhra Pradesh on April 21-22.
DELHI WEATHER UPDATE
Delhi, which reeled under heatwave conditions for the past few days, had some relief on Wednesday with strong winds and partly cloudy skies witnessed during the day. The maximum temperature settled at 38.2 degrees Celsius.
The maximum temperature is likely to drop by another two to three degrees over the next two days, settling at 36 degrees Celsius in the national capital, a MeT official said.
According to the 7-day forecast, there is a possibility of drizzle at one or two places in Delhi on Thursday.
HEATWAVE INTENSIFIED IN THESE STATES
Heatwave conditions intensified on Wednesday in most parts of the country, including eastern states, with Tripura declaring a ‘state specific disaster’, reported PTI. According to the weather department, hot weather conditions will continue to prevail over several eastern Indian states like Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha for one or two more days, and the maximum temperatures are likely to dip by a few notches thereafter.
On Wednesday, Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh and Baripada in Odisha recorded the maximum temperature of 44.5 degrees Celsius.
On the other hand, Mumbai, Thane, and Navi Mumbai experienced heatwave conditions, with the suburban Santacruz observatory recording a temperature of 38.5 degrees Celsius. Navi Mumbai sizzled at 42 degrees Celsius, the IMD said.
As several parts of Gangetic West Bengal saw temperatures above 40 degrees Celsius, the MeT has forecast heatwave conditions in pockets of north Bengal as well. Severe heatwave conditions are expected in isolated pockets of Gangetic West Bengal till Thursday, the MeT department said.
LIGHT RAIN TO BRING RELIEF
While most parts of the country reeled under heatwave conditions, the higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh received a fresh spell of snow during the day and the mid and lower hills experienced widespread rains.
Due to rain, maximum temperatures plummeted across the state on Wednesday and stayed 6 to 15 notches below normal in most places in the mid and higher hills.
IMD has issued a yellow warning for thunderstorms and lightning at isolated places on April 20 and 21, predicting a wet spell till April 25.
On the other hand, dust storm conditions were witnessed in several areas in Bikaner and Jodhpur divisions in Rajasthan. The weather department has predicted thunderstorms with strong winds and light to moderate rain at some places in Jaipur and Bharatpur division on Thursday.
After several days of scorching heat in Andhra Pradesh, the weather office has forecast thunderstorms on April 21 and 22 in parts of the state, bringing some relief to people from the hot weather.
