Same-sex marriage hearing Day 9: Key Takeaways

[ad_1]

During the ninth day of the hearing of pleas seeking validation of same-sex marriage, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Centre, told the Supreme Court that states, including Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Assam, have opposed the legalisation of homosexual marriages.

“We have received seven responses from state governments. Rajasthan has taken a position that they have examined and opposed it, while the rest say that this needs an expansive debate,” Tushar Mehta said to the court.

The Solicitor General told the court that while the governments of Assam, Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh opposed legalising same-sex marriage, the governments of Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Manipur and Sikkim have sought more time to respond.

The opposing states have quoted different religions and underlined Acts under the Constitution to substantiate their stand against the same-sex marriage.
