By India Today News Desk: Union minister and BJP leader Smriti Irani on Friday claimed that she had seen Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra offering ‘namaz’ on the streets of Amethi in 2019 during the Lok Sabha elections. Her statement was in reference to Karnataka Congress leader DK Shivakumar’s promise to build Hanuman temples in poll-bound Karnataka.
Smriti Irani said that while Shivakumar promises to build temples in the state, his fellow Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi’s allegiance lies with Islam, which is against idol worshiping or building temples.
Smriti Irani told news agency ANI, “I had like to humbly tell DK Shivakumar that he is not going to become the CM, so it is better if he does not make the false promise of a temple. Before saying this, did he check with Mrs Vadra? I say this because, during the 2019 Lok Sabha election in Amethi, I saw Mrs Vadra offering namaz on the street. We all know that those who believe in Islam can’t do idol worshipping or build temples. So, if his leader is against idol worshipping and temple, can DK Shivakunar make such a promise?”
In its manifesto for the Karnataka Assembly election, the Congress promised to ban right-wing Hindu outfit Bajrang Dal. The BJP called the Congress’s poll promise ‘anti-Hanuman’ and ‘anti-Hindu’.
Several Congress leaders, including party chief Mallikarjun Kharge have defended the promise made in poll manifesto, accusing the BJP of equating Lord Hanuman with Bajrang Dal.
Polling for the Karnataka Assembly election will take place on May 10, which leaves political parties only a few more days for campaigning. From Friday, Prime Minister Modi will camp in the state for the next three days. The Prime Minister will hold mega roadshows on Saturday and Sunday. The roadshow will go through 18 constituencies.
