Schedule Castes panel summons senior Bengal officers in teen’s death case

By Rajesh Saha: The National Commission of Scheduled Castes has taken a prompt stand on a teen’s death in North Dinajpur in West Bengal. Arun Halder, the vice-chairperson of the national commission, summoned the Inspector General of Police, the district magistrate and the police superintendent of North Dinajpur district to appear before his office.

All three senior officers have been asked to appear before the commission at 11 am on April 28. A notice has already been issued to the IGP (North Bengal) Ajay Kumar, DM Arvind Kumar Mina and Police Superintendent Md Sana Akhtar.

The commission said they have fixed the date for a hearing into the girl’s death. All senior officers have been asked to remain present before the office of the Vice Chairperson Arun Haldar, along with the FIR copy, case diary and an updated report into the case.

The Bengal police have been recommended by the commission to suspend the investigating officer of the case and the superintendent of police for their alleged negligence in duty, the commission said.

Arun Halder warned that summons would be issued to bureaucrats of the state government when he visited the place where the girl’s body was found. He also threatened that if they ignored the summons, they would be placed under arrest.

“Whenever we visit any place to conduct any enquiry, it’s compulsory for the district magistrate and superintendent of police to be present at the spot. It’s a constitutional mandate. But, here the DM and SP didn’t appear,” Halder said after visiting the victim’s family. “It has really surprised me that our commission from Delhi has reached here, but the investigation officer wasn’t present on the scene. With this, the mindset of the government can be assumed,” he added.
