By Kumar Kunal: A scuffle broke out between protesting wrestlers and Delhi Police at Jantar Mantar during the late hours of Wednesday. The protesting athletes have alleged that police personnel attacked and abused them.
Aam Aadmi Party MLA from Malviya Nagar Somnath Bharti claimed that he was detained by officials for providing protesting women wrestlers with foldable cots and merely fulfilling their demands.
In visuals, Delhi Police officials and protestors can be seen arguing over a cot.
Speaking to the media from the protest site, wrestler Bajrang Punia said the protestors were in need of support from the whole country.
“We’re in need of the support of the whole country, everyone must come to Delhi. Police using force against us, abusing women and doing nothing against Brijbhushan…” he said.
WHY ARE WRESTLERS PROTESTING
The second phase of heavy protests is being carried out by Indian wrestlers, including Olympics winners, who have accused the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Singh of sexual assault allegations, including that of a minor wrestler.
The wrestlers, during the demonstration, have repeatedly lashed out at Indian Olympics Association head PT Usha for overlooking grave allegations against Brij Bhushan Singh despite being a “woman”. On the other hand, Usha said the protests showed a lack of discipline among the wrestlers and even criticised the move.
The wrestlers have been calling for Singh’s “immediate arrest” since one of the complainants is a minor.
WFI CHIEF SAID…
Brij Bhushan Singh has been levelled with allegations of sexually exploiting female wrestlers for many years, a charge that the sports administrator and BJP MP from Kaiserganj has categorically denied. Refuting all claims, he has said that these protests were politically motivated and the accusations were false.
In fact, Singh has said that he has got proof to show that protests by wrestlers were part of a “conspiracy” hatched by Congress and wrestler Bajrang Punia. He said that his mere resignation was not what these protestors have been seeking.
Brij Bhushan Singh also said that he was ready to resign if it would make the protesters go back home and sleep peacefully.
POLICE ACTION
The Delhi Police has filed two FIRs against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh after the Supreme Court intervened. “The first FIR has been registered under the POCSO Act along with relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). It was filed based on the allegations of a minor. The second FIR was registered for a comprehensive investigation into the complaints by other complainants under relevant sections pertaining to outraging of modesty,” the Delhi Police said in a statement.
