All three shooters were nabbed immediately by the UP Police, while a cop sustained minor injuries. According to the UP Police FIR, the three shooters said they wanted to kill gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf “to become popular and big gangsters”.
When UP Police asked the shooters about their intentions, they revealed that their main purpose was to make their mark in the crime world by killing Atiq and Ashraf. They had planned to kill Atiq and Ashraf ever since they got the information about the duo’s remand, masquerading as media journalists and they got the opportunity on Saturday.
How Atiq’s shooters executed their plan
At 10.35 pm, the police reached the medical college. They had barely walked 15-20 steps, surrounded by the media, and then they stopped to give the byte to the media.
As per the FIR, the moment Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf started talking to the media, one of the shooters dropped his mic and camera and picked up his pistol and shot at them. In cross firing, one of the constables, Mann Singh, was shot in the hand and one of the attackers also got shot in his accomplice’s cross firing.
After that, shooters dropped their loaded weapons. Some of the journalists who were covering the incident also got minor injuries.
Atiq and Ashraf were brought to hospital where they were declared dead.
Atiq had links with Pak-based LeT, ISI
UP Police, in its FIR, revealed that Atiq received arms dropped by Pakistani drones in Punjab. Atiq Ahmed was a leader of IS 227 gang and a history-sheeter and his brother Ashraf was an active member of IS 227 gang.
Atiq said in a statement that he had links with Pak-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and ISI and received arms dropped through a Pakistani drone in Punjab. Atiq and Ashraf said that they knew the address of the person who delivered those arms but couldn’t locate it from jail and would be able to tell if they reached the location. Arms used in the murder of Umesh Pal were received from the person concerned with the address, the FIR by UP Police said.
On April 14, police tried to question Atiq and Ashraf but couldn’t get much information as they were shocked due to Asad’s death.
On April 15, police recovered pistols and cartridges with a Pakistani connection used in Umesh Pal’s murder and an FIR was registered under the arms act against them.
