By Suryagni Roy: An Assam Rifles jawan, who was shot by some miscreants during Manipur violence on May 10, succumbed to his injuries at Command Hospital Kolkata on Wednesday.
The jawan was wounded in the firing by the miscreants in Manipur East’s Dolaithabi last Wednesday. The incident took place when a team of the Assam Rifles was patrolling the area.
The jawan was rushed to a hospital while the miscreants fled.
He was later moved to Kolkata’s Command hospital.
This is the first incident where an Army personnel was targeted in Manipur ever since the clashes broke out between Kuki tribal group and non-tribal Meitei community. Meanwhile, 128 Army and Assam Rifles columns are deployed in Manipur to restore and maintain law and order situation.
The unrest in Manipur erupted on May 3, after a protest march organised by the Kuki tribal group sparked clashes with the non-tribal Meitei community. The march was called to oppose the recent Manipur High Court order, which had asked the state government to send a recommendation to the Centre regarding the demand to include the majority and predominantly Hindu Meitei community in the Scheduled Tribes (STs) list.
