By Shilpa Nair: Tamil Thai Vazhthu, the state anthem of Tamil Nadu, played on stage during a BJP election rally in Karnataka’s Shimoga, prompting senior party leader KS Eswarappa to stop it midway.
The incident happened during an election rally in Shimoga on Thursday which was also attended by K Annamalai, BJP’s Tamil Nadu president and Karnataka co-in charge. At the beginning of the event, the organisers played the Tamil invocation song.
A viral video of the event showed Annamalai and other BJP leaders standing at attention as Tamil Thai Vazhthu plays in the background. However, Eswarappa interrupted it midway and asked them to play the Karnataka state anthem instead.

The ruling DMK in Tamil Nadu has taken a jibe at Annamalai, asking why the BJP leader stood silent when his state anthem was “disrespected” in Karnataka.
“Why does Annamalai refuse to open his mouth for disrespecting Tamil Thai Vazhthu in Karnataka by BJP leader?” DMK spokesperson R Rajiv Gandhi said.
Karnataka goes to polls on May 10 and the results will be announced on May 13.
