By India Today News Desk: The death toll in Tamil Nadu twin hooch tragedies that took place in Villupuram and Chengalpattu districts rose to 22 after four more people died on Tuesday. Fourteen from Marakkanam in Villupuram district and eight from Maduranthakam in Chengalpattu district have died till now after consuming illicit liquor over the weekend.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday issued notices to the ruling DMK government in Tamil Nadu and DGP Sylendra Babu over the twin hooch tragedies. In a statement, the commission asked that the state government to prohibit the sale and consumption of illicit liquor.
The NHRC also observed that the if the contents of the media reports are considered true, this (twin hooch tragedies) amount to a violation of the right to life of the people, reported news agency ANI.
DMK FACES FLAK FROM OPPOSITION
The state government also faced flak from the Opposition leaders as Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai accused DMK of providing compensation to the accused, Amavasai.
Taking to Twitter, Annamalai wrote, “Amavasai was the main accused in the Chengapattu illicit arrack case and he is the brother of a DMK functionary in Chithamur, in Chengalapattu district. Fearing arrest, Amavasai staged a drama of consuming illicit liquor due to which he was admitted in the hospital and the DMK government, which announced compensation of Rs 50,000 for those admitted in the hospital, has given the amount to Amavasai, too.”

Besides, the Tamil Manila Congress have decided to carry out a campaign on May 20 in Chennai against the sale of illicit liquor. The party condemned the sale of spurious liquor and mentioned that they would also launch a statewide campaign on May 22, reported Times of India.
