By Anupam Mishra: A protest against the alleged rape and murder of a minor girl turned violent in West Bengal’s Uttar Dinajpur district on Friday after the locals blocked roads and indulged in vandalism, forcing the police to resort to lathicharge and firing tear gas shells at them.

On Thursday, the locals found the body of the minor, who had gone missing. According to reports, she belonged to the Rajbongshi community. One person has been arrested by the police in connection with the girl’s death.

The locals alleged that the girl was raped and killed and staged the protest demanding justice for her. During the protests, they blocked the roads and damaged chairs and tables of nearby shops. Subsequently, police arrived at the spot on receiving information about the vandalism by locals and lathicharged at them. Police also fired tear gas shells to control the situation. Few locals have been arrested as well.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari criticised the law and order situation in the state and accused the state government of not taking action as “perpetrators were becoming emboldened”.

“Another rape and murder of a minor girl in West Bengal. The dead body of a Class X student, belonging to the Rajbongshi community, from Kaliaganj, Uttar Dinajpur was found in such a condition. Days after tribal ladies were punished with atonement ritual, this happens to a Rajbongshi girl,” Adhikari said in a tweet.

Taking a jibe at the TMC government over the security of women in the state, he said, “Sorry state of law and order situation in West Bengal as police is busy with making security arrangements for ‘Bhaipo’s Nabajowar’. Unfortunately, the common people, especially women, are paying the price. The perpetrators are getting emboldened due to the inaction of the state government.”
