By Suryagni Roy: Authorities at the Visva Bharati University on Friday issued an eviction notice to Nobel laureate and economist Amartya Sen over the ongoing land row. The notice was put up at the gate of Sen’s residence in Shantiniketan.
The university authorities will take a final decision on Amartya Sen’s land on April 19, the notice said. As per the notice, the premises in question is public premises owned by or belonging to Visva Bharati.
“Sri Amartya Kumar Sen, the alleged unauthorised occupant, himself applied to Visa Bharati, the owner of the premises, for continuation of (or rather, the mutation of the lease originally granted to his father late Ashutosh Sen on 27-10-1943 by the Visa Bharati Society of 1.25 acres of land in the concerned public premises i.e. the L Plot no 1900/2487 (corresponding to RS Plot no 1900/2487 and further corresponding part of CS Plot no 1900) of mouza Surul (JL-104), He also applied to Visva-Bharati, for permission for construction on this premises,” the notice read.

Earlier on Thursday, a court in West Bengal’s Bolpur permitted the imposition of Section 145 on the ‘disputed’ land at the Shantiniketan home of Amartya Sen.
The court ordered police deployment in the area to ensure law and order as Sen’s lawyers expressed concern over the breach of security at the economist’s ‘Pratichi’ residence in Shantiniketan.
It is pertinent to mention that Nobel Prize winner Sen, who is currently in the US, is accused by Visva Bharati University of “illegal possession” of the excess area at his ‘Pratichi’ residence. Despite several pleas, Sen has refused to return the occupied land which is beyond the 1.25 acres that he is entitled to, allegedly belonging to the university, Visva Bharati Vice Chancellor Bidyut Chakraborty earlier claimed.
So far, the university has already sent three missives to Sen, including a show cause notice, asking him to explain why an eviction notice must not be sent to him, news agency PTI reported.
