By India Today News Desk: Moments after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar announced his resignation as the party’s national president, his nephew Ajit Pawar said “we are a family” and urged his uncle to rethink about his decision to step down.
Sharad Pawar’s surprise resignation announcement was made at the launch event of the second edition of his autobiography Lok Maze Sangati. The resignation comes against the backdrop of speculation that his nephew Ajit Pawar would join hands with the BJP in Maharashtra.
Ajit Pawar, who was present at the event where his uncle announced his resignation, said he will abide by the decision of the NCP committee on the resignation.
Ajit Pawar said the members of the said committee are “not from outside and they are from within the NCP family itself”.
“We are a family. Saheb (Sharad Pawar) will abide by the decision of the NCP committee on his resignation. We will form the committee with unanimity. But please, take back your resignation. It’s a humble request,” Ajit Pawar said.
“Don’t worry, they’re from the NCP family, be it myself or be it Supriya Sule,” he remarked.

These developments come amid strong buzz around Ajit Pawar joining hands with the BJP-led Maharashtra government headed by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
Ajit Pawar, a former deputy chief minister, has repeatedly denied that he will join hands with the BJP. He said he would remain with the NCP. The 63-year-old is currently the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly. He is a four-time deputy chief minister.
Amid the speculation, Ajit Pawar was recently asked about whether he would be in the fray for the chief minister’s post after the Maharashtra assembly elections next year. “Why 2024? I am willing to stake claim even now,” he said.
Ajit Pawar is said to fancy his chances to be the chief minister in 2024 if the NCP emerges as the single-largest party in the MVA alliance, and is also reported to be upset at the coalition projecting Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) president and former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray as the MVA’s face.
