By Anupam Mishra: The West Bengal government brought back 35 students from violence-hit Manipur on a special flight. The flight landed in Kolkata at 8 pm on Tuesday.
Of the 35 students evacuated, 13 are from National Sports University, 14 from NIT Manipur students, five from RIMS Imphal and three from IIIT Manipur. After getting constant distress calls of Bengalis being stuck in Manipur, the West Bengal government has been continuing its efforts to evacuate people from Manipur.
The students, who were brought back to Bengal, hail from various districts of Darjeeling, Cooch Behar, Malda, Paschim Bardhaman, Purulia, Paschim Medinipur, Nadia, North 24 Parganas, South 24 Parganas, Kolkata and a few other parts of the state. The Bengal government has also arranged transit accommodation and onward journey.
Earlier on Sunday, 18 students, who were stranded in Manipur, were brought back. The West Bengal government is carrying out rescue missions with the help of the Manipur government.
Several states began rescue operations to bring back their people from the Northeastern state after violence erupted in Manipur last week. Manipur is recovering from the unrest which started due to clashes between tribal communities after the Manipur High Court asked the state government to send recommendation to the Centre regarding the demand to include the Meitei commmunity in the Scheduled Tribes list.
Meanwhile, Army officials met Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh and discussed the security situation in the state. Almost 100 columns of Indian Army have been deployed in Manipur to tackle the situation.
