By India Today News Desk: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted light to moderate rainfall with a few spells of intense rain, thunderstorm and lighting over different parts of the country.
“Light to moderate rainfall with few spell of intense rain, thunderstorm & lighting very likely to continue over parts of Kerala, Tamilnadu, south interior Karnataka, northeast India, central & east Uttar Pradesh, West Bihar,” said the IMD.
The weather department forecast came late at night on Monday as several parts of the country witnessed rainfall or thundershowers.
Downpours were recorded in many places in Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
It also rained in a few places in Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha, Kerala and Lakshadweep, the bulletin showed.
According to the weather office in Jaipur, heavy rainfall lashed parts of Rajasthan on Monday too and more are likely from Tuesday. Tonk, Bundi and Nagaur witnessed hailstorms as well, it said, adding the rainfall was triggered by a western disturbance.
YELLOW ALERT IN UTTARAKHAND
While rain lashed several places in Uttarakhand, there was intermittent snowfall at the Himalayan temples of Badrinath and Kedarnath. SSP Shweta Choubey of Srinagar said the pilgrims going to Badrinath and Kedarnath have been stopped in Srinagar Garhwal due to continuous snowfall and heavy rain in the temple areas. Shweta Choubey appealed to pilgrims to stay in Srinagar till the weather clears up.
The meteorological office had issued a yellow alert for the state for Monday forecasting hailstorms, rain and snowfall at places located above 3,500 metres.
ORANGE ALERT IN HIMACHAL
An orange alert was issued in Himachal Pradesh after several parts of the hill state witnessed heavy downpours.
“We have issued an orange alert, & in some areas we have issued heavy rainfall warnings for the next 2-3 days. In the last 24 hours, it rained all over the state, with Kangra receiving maximum rainfall. There have been reports of hailstorms in Shimla & Jubbal. Rain will continue for the next 48 hours, there has been a significant drop in temperature,” said Surender Paul, IMD chief of Himachal Pradesh.
HAILSTORM LIKELY IN PUNJAB & HARYANA
The maximum temperatures in Haryana and Punjab dropped below normal average after rainfall in several parts of the two states.
According to the Chandigarh weather office, the places which received rains include Chandigarh, Ambala, Bhiwani, Mahendergarh, Sonipat, Amritsar, Pathankot, Rupnagar and Mohali.
The weather department said that hailstorm activity was very likely at isolated places in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh on May 2, and heavy rainfall at isolated places in Punjab on May 2.
SURPLUS RAINFALL IN JHARKHAND
For the second consecutive month, Jharkhand recorded surplus rainfall as summer showers for a week helped the state register 37 per cent excess rain in April, a weather official in Ranchi said to news agency PTI on Monday.
Despite parts of Jharkhand facing severe heatwave conditions between April 10 and 21, the state received 27 mm of rain in the last week of the month against the normal rainfall of 19.8 mm, he said.
The wet weather is likely to continue till May 4 and the temperature may again rise from the next day.
HEAVY RAIN IN DELHI
Heavy rains in many parts of Delhi on Monday kept the mercury at a pleasant 26.1 degrees Celsius, 13 degrees below average for this time of the year, with the wet spell likely to continue for two more days owing to western disturbances. It was the second coolest day of May in 13 years, reported PTI.
After the rainfall, traffic snarls and waterlogging were reported in several parts of the national capital.
