What Sharad Pawar told NCP leaders on decision to step down as party chief

[ad_1]

By Ritvick Arun Bhalekar: Sharad Pawar on Tuesday announced his decision to step down as president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), a move that came as a surprise to many. Following his resignation, NCP leaders and workers staged protests, urging the octogenarian leader to rescind the decision.

A day later, Sharad Pawar called a meeting with all the protesting party workers. Sharad Pawar, after meeting party senior leaders on Wednesday, said he should have taken the seniors and party workers into confidence before stepping down from the party president post, according to sources.

“If I had asked everyone about this decision, naturally everyone would have opposed it. So, I chose to directly announce it,” Sharad Pawar said.

Sharad Pawar called for a committee meeting on May 5 or May 6, adding that the decision taken by the committee would be acceptable.

“On May 1, 1960, I took over as the president of the youth wing, so I have a very special bond with May 1. Thus, I expressed the desire to roll the bread (roti palatna remark) at the meeting of the youth wing last week,” Sharad Pawar said at the meeting.

The NCP leader said that he takes the views of young people into consideration and wants to bring young people from rural areas into the mainstream.
