By India Today News Desk: She may not be as feared as her husband Atiq Ahmed was. She may not be a well-known figure in the underworld like him. But Shaista Parveen, whose first name means ‘beautiful’ in Pashto, in reality, is a complete contrast to her name. Losing her husband and son Asad in a span of just two days, Shaista now finds herself in a tight corner. Currently absconding, she is now one of the “most wanted criminals” in Uttar Pradesh.
The state police has announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information leading to her arrest and a massive search operation has been launched to nab her.
The life of Shaista Parveen, born into a policeman’s family, was quite different from what it is now. But how did Shaista Parveen end up being a part of the underworld and what is her situation after her husband Atiq’s death?
BROUGHT UP IN MODEST FAMILY
Shaista Parveen, from Damupur village in Prayagraj, is the eldest of four sisters and two brothers.
Her father, Mohammed Haroon, is a retired police constable. One of Shaista’s two brothers is the principal of a madrasa.
Given her family background, Shaista was expected to live a life away from the limelight and not get embroiled in controversies. Initially, restricting herself to doing domestic chores, she lived with her father in a government police quarter, according to a report by The Times of India.
MORE EDUCATED THAN ATIQ AHMED
While Atiq Ahmed received very little formal education, Shaista Parveen studied at Kidwai Girls Inter College at Himmatganj, Prayagraj. She also completed her graduation. Little did she wonder that her life would take a complete turn when she got married to Atiq in 1996, with whom she had five children. The earlier Shaista could never have imagined that she would get associated with the underworld.

SHAISTA’S TRYST WITH POLITICS
Shaista tried her luck in politics. She had joined Asaduddin Owaisi’s AIMIM in 2021. However, in January this year, she becme a member of the BSP, hoping to secure a ticket for the Prayagraj mayoral polls. But after she was named an accused in the FIR filed by Umesh Pal’s wife Jaya Pal in his murder case, Shaista went incommunicado and her party distanced itself from the controversy. BSP chief Mayawati subsequently announced that Shaista would not get the ticket to contest the mayoral polls.
NAMED IN UMESH PAL MURDER CASE
While Atiq Ahmed was accused in more than 100 cases, Shaista Parveen became the first woman from his family to be named as an accused in any crime. She has been mentioned in the FIR lodged in the murder of Umesh Pal, the prime witness in the 2005 BSP MLA Raju Pal murder case. She has been evading the police since then. The investigation into the case is still going on.
According to police sources, Shaista is believed to be involved in the case, in which Umesh Pal and his two police guards were shot dead in Prayagraj on February 24 this year. She reportedly told her son Asad and shooter Ghulam to flee from Prayagraj after the killing of Umesh Pal. Four cases have been registered against Shaista till now.

SHAISTA’S SONS ALSO ACCUSED IN CRIMINAL CASES
Shaista and Atiq were not the only ones named as accused in several crime cases. Her eldest son Umar is lodged in Lucknow jail on the charges of extorting, assaulting and kidnapping a Lucknow-based businessman, Mohit Jaiswal, in 2018. Her second son Ali is lodged in Prayagraj’s Naini jail on charges of attempt to murder and extortion.

Her two minor sons — Aizan Ahmed and Aban Ahmed — have been kept in the Child Protection Home by the police. However, Shaista filed an application alleging that police picked up the minor sons from her residence for interrogation and their whereabouts haven’t been known since.
Asad, who was named in the Umesh Pal murder FIR, was killed in a police encounter on April 13.
RUMOURS OF SURRENDERING
After her son Asad was killed in a police encounter in Jhansi, there was speculation that Shaista would surrender. However, she never turned up even at her son’s funeral. When Atiq and his brother were shot dead in police custody in Prayagraj, rumours went rife that Shaista would finally make an appearance. But even then, she was nowhere to be found. The question is when will Shaista Parveen surface? And will she surrender?
