By India Today News Desk: On the night of March 28, 2022, gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed’s brother Ashraf, said that he would be killed in two weeks. Ashraf had also claimed that a senior police officer threatened him that he would be taken out of jail in two weeks and would be killed.
And on Saturday night, Atiq and Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three men posing as journalists in the middle of a media interaction. They were killed when police personnel were escorting them to a medical college here for a checkup.
Last month, Ashraf was shifted to Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly jail to be presented in the 2006 Umesh Pal kidnapping case. While Ashraf was acquitted by the court, Atiq was convicted.
‘I WOULD BE KILLED IN 2 WEEKS’
“Kisi bahane se two hafte baad tumhe jail se nikalenge aur nipta denge. (You would be taken out of jail on pretext of some reason and would be killed). I cannot disclose the name of the police officer who threatened me. A conspiracy has been hatched against my family. This is also a conspiracy to defame the Uttar Pradesh government. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has been accused of fake cases, so he understands my pain very well,” Ashraf had claimed.
“After my murder, a sealed envelope would reach the Chief Justice of Prayagraj and CM Yogi Adityanath. Do I look like a mafia to you? I have been in jail for the past three years. I have been an MLA once. How can I hatch a conspiracy while being in jail?”, he had said while responding to a few questions from media persons.

Ashraf also spoke about Atiq Ahmed’s wife Shaista Parveen, an accused in the Umesh Pal murder case. “Shaista Parveen had plans to contest the mayoral elections and she was engaged in election campaigning, so false charges were framed against her,” Ashraf had claimed.
Ashraf had also denied his involvement in the Umesh Pal murder case, saying that it was not possible for him to plan a murder while being constantly monitored.

On Saturday night, moments before being shot, Ashraf uttered the name of Guddu Muslim, who threw the bomb from the bike at Umesh Pal on February 24 this year.
“Main baat ye hai ki Guddu Muslim…” Ashraf could not finish his statement as Atiq Ahmed was shot in the head. The next shot was for Ashraf and what they were going to reveal about Guddu Muslim remains unknown.
