By India Today News Desk: Two days after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) chief and veteran Maharashtra politician Sharad Pawar decided to step down from his role, an 18-member committee formed by him to name the new national president of the party will meet today. A committee of the NCP will meet at 11 am today to decide who will head the NCP next.
Ahead of the party meeting, NCP workers raised slogans in support of Sharad Pawar outside the party office in Mumbai.
Former Maharashtra deputy CM Ajit Pawar and Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Assembly Ajit Pawar has arrived at the party office in Mumbai.

The committee tasked with choosing a successor will meet today to decide on the next step as instructed by Sharad Pawar. “The proposal to reject Sharad Pawar’s resignation will be moved in today’s committee meeting, senior NCP leader Praful Patel told India Today. Praful Patel will himself move the proposal of rejecting Pawar’s resignation.
The committee was set up by 82-year-old Pawar to pick his successor and it includes Ajit Pawar, Supriya Sule, former Union leader Parful Patel and Bhujbal.

NCP leaders, on condition of anonymity, told PTI that Baramati Lok Sabha MP and Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule is likely to be the party’s national chief while Ajit Pawar will take charge of the Maharashtra unit.
According to these leaders, Supriya Sule had established herself as an effective parliamentarian and had contacts with leaders of parties across the political spectrum. On the other hand, Ajit Pawar has a good hold over the state unit and is widely acknowledged as an able administrator, leaders told PTI.

NCP leaders lodged a strong protest after Sharad Pawar announced his resignation, asking him to withdraw it.
Ahead of the key party meeting, Sharad Pawar told his party workers on Thursday, “After I announced the decision, many colleagues from outside Maharashtra have come to this place. They want to talk to me tomorrow. We will meet tomorrow evening and then a final call will be taken in a day or two keeping in mind the feelings of you and the colleagues into confidence.”

“Supriya Sule should take up the party’s national mantle and Ajit Pawar must head the state unit,” senior NCP leader and former state minister Chhagan Bhujbal had told PTI. He, however, added that this was his personal opinion.

Top Opposition leaders from across the country dialled the NCP patriach today and expressed their desire to Sharad Pawar that he should remain as NCP party chief. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin dialled Supriya Sule today as Sharad Pawar has been working to unite opposition leaders ahead of the 2024 elections.

Sharad Pawar on Tuesday announced his resignation on May 2 at the launch of his autobiography, a move that left many party leaders and workers in shock. Party leaders and workers protested against his decision, while some broke down amid a chorus that Mr Pawar should continue as the NCP supremo.

After Sharad Pawar decided to step down, his nephew Ajit Pawar met him, who quoted him as saying, “We all met Sharad Pawar today and urged him to consider the demands of the workers and he said he will take 2-3 days to think over his decision.”

Sharad Pawar has not shown any inclination to change his mind so far. Addressing the emotional partymen, Sharad Pawar said: “It is true that before taking such a decision it should have been discussed with the co-workers. But I knew that you would never agree, so I took a direct decision”.
