Worker dies of suffocation cleaning septic tank in Tamil Nadu’s Ranipet

By Pramod Madhav: A worker was killed and three others were hospitalised due to asphyxiation while cleaning a drainage tank belonging to a tannery at the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) in Ranipet.

According to sources, the incident took place on Tuesday night. They said eight men were employed to clean a drainage tank.

Around 11 pm when the work began, Tamilchelvan got into the tank and immediately collapsed. Mahendran, Raja, and Ramadass who tried to rescue him also inhaled poisonous gas and collapsed.

The other four pulled them out and informed the authorities. SIPCOT Police immediately rushed in and took workers to Walajapet Government Hospital where Tamilchelvan was declared brought dead while the other three are undergoing treatment.

A case has also been registered to find out if the workers were adequately equipped for the cleaning work as the drainage was a collection point for chemicals used to treat leather and if proper procedure was followed.

Police said further investigation was underway.
